Hair does not sit on upholstery, it weaves into it, and suction alone will not pull it back out. The short roller inside this head turns against the fabric and combs the hair loose so the airstream can take it away. On a dark sofa or a car seat that is the difference between a surface which looks vacuumed and one which is. The narrow body also lets the head follow a stair tread properly, covering it in a single pass instead of overhanging the nosing.
Every small roller eventually collects thread and hair around its bearing ends. Clear that first when the head starts to feel lazy, and if the roller no longer frees up, or the housing has cracked at the neck, a new 95031AM is the straightforward fix.
