Air travels through this compartment on its way to the motor, so the shell has a sealing job as well as a structural one. Splits at the corners, a broken latch mount, a torn fixing boss or a rim distorted after the machine has gone over on a stair all produce the same outcome: air slips around the bag rather than passing through it, suction falls away, and dust that should be captured ends up loading the pre-motor filter.
