Behind the suction dial on an AIRBELT E1 KOMBI, and on an E2 TURBO as well, sits a small toothed pinion, and turning the dial is what moves it. The pinion hands that movement to the potentiometer sitting behind the fascia. Part 8256ER is the pinion on its own.
The chain it belongs to is short and mechanical at the front end. Your fingers move the control, the pinion turns the potentiometer shaft, the potentiometer changes its resistance, and the control board reads that change and sets the motor to suit. On these two canisters the board in question is 8292ER, which covers the AIRBELT E1 KOMBI and E2 TURBO exactly as this pinion does. Because the pinion is the only link in that chain made of moulded plastic and loaded directly by hand, it is the link that wears.
Rounded teeth, or a pinion gone slack on its shaft, and the dial spins with nothing happening, or it responds across part of the sweep and then dies.
