Need to return an item? We’re happy to help. Eligible items may be returned by requesting authorization within 35 days of delivery. Once approved, your return must reach us within 21 days.
Return eligibility
Items must be unused, in new condition, and include their original packaging and all accessories. Machines that use water cannot be returned once unboxed, unless defective upon arrival.
Shipping and refunds
For non-defective returns, customers cover return shipping. Original shipping charges are nonrefundable. If your order included free shipping, our actual outbound shipping cost will be deducted from your refund. Eligible returns have no restocking fee.

The handle lock shaft is the pivot the handle latches against when a Kirby is stood upright, and this genuine Kirby part, 136959S, fits the 516 through 562, the Dual Sanitronic 50 and 80, and the Classic 1CR, Classic Omega 1CB and Classic III 2CB.
Decades of reclining and locking wear the shaft where the latch bears on it. Once that face is worn flat the handle stops holding its upright position, drifts back as you carry the machine, or needs a shove to lock at all. Some machines go the other way and jam, because the worn shaft binds in its bore.
Fitting a new shaft brings back a positive latch. It is worth replacing the handle lock spring at the same time, since a tired spring produces much the same symptom and the two come apart together anyway.
