Part 28218061 is the push-button power switch used across a long line of Hoover Elite uprights and F-series carpet cleaners, mounted in the body panel exactly where your thumb lands, and it is the single point that sends power onward toward the motor.
Switches wear out mechanically well before any other part of the unit does, since every start and stop runs through the same set of contacts inside. The failure shows up in two familiar ways: press the button and get no response at all, or the vacuum runs fine until the handle gets nudged and it dies mid-pass. That second pattern, cutting out with vibration or handle movement rather than staying off, is switch contacts losing connection under load, not a motor problem. Push-button switches like this one carry the full motor current through a small set of internal contacts every time they close, and each cycle wears those contacts a little further.
