This is the grooved brush roll for the Turbo Cat EX power nozzle, part 8896, and it comes packaged with its drive belt, so you are not pairing a used belt with a new roller or guessing at tension.
The grooved surface is built to grip carpet fiber more aggressively than a smooth roller, which is the point of a power nozzle in the first place: the motorized brush does agitation work the canister's suction alone cannot do on carpet.
Replace the roller once bristles or grooves are visibly flattened, when hair and thread have built up faster than you can clear them, or when the nozzle rolls over debris on carpet instead of lifting it. Because the belt ships with the roller, this is also a reasonable time to swap the belt even if it looks intact, since both wear on a similar schedule.
Check that the new roller turns freely by hand before the nozzle housing goes back together, and route the fresh belt the same way the old one ran rather than assuming it can only sit in one position. A belt seated wrong under the housing binds against the roller and wears out again quickly, undoing the point of replacing it.
